Fiber Optic Splicer
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Follow established fiber optic troubleshooting procedures to identify faults within the system.
2. Correct faults found using standard methods and procedures approved by FiberNet.
3. Perform all functions of fiber splicing including cable preparation, splicing, enclosure drilling and mounting, and restoring the enclosure to its normal configuration. Assist all technical and field personnel when required. Experience with Raychem, 3M, Preformed splice enclosures a must.
4. Perform OTDR testing and documentation of work done to ensure as-builds that enable troubleshooting.
5. Available for ONCALL 24/7 for emergency call outs and night work. Perform emergency repairs on an as needed basis.
6. Inspect and perform quality assurance of sub-contractor installations with necessary documentation.
7. Assist in construction of fiber optic cable plants or subscriber installation.
8. Innovate and suggest new ideas and efforts towards continuous quality improvement.
9. Demonstrate support of customer service initiatives. Connect to customer equipment or patch bays per design.
10. Inform supervisor in a clear, concise, and timely manner of any unresolved customer or technical issues.
11. Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times. Perform other related duties and tasks as assigned or as become evident.
EXPERIENCE / SKILLS:
1. High school diploma or equivalent degree required. Valid state driver’s license required with clear driving record. Able to pass DOT physical. Experience with truck and trailer combination over 10,000 Lbs.
2. Knowledge of plant construction standards including installation, test and maintenance practices related to fiber optic networks required. Ability to operate optic fusion splicer Fujikura 40S and 30R preferred, OTDR CMA 4000 preferred, optic power meter, and other related test equipment required.
3. Ability to work with and use personal computers required. This is a very active and physical job.
4. The essential functions of the position require that the incumbent must have the ability to:
- Climb poles and ladders, using gaffs when necessary; carry, setup and extend 70 lb. Ladders.
- Work with confidence at heights up to 45 feet on gaffs; ladders, or in a bucket truck.
- Lift 70 lbs. routinely and 100 lbs. occasionally; reach, push, pulls and holds frequently.
5. Work indoors or outdoors in all types of weather year round; Use standard tools of the trade(screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, strippers, crimpers, hammers, etc.); Work in confined spaces for extended periods (up to 2 hours).
6. Maximum body weight can not exceed 280 pounds in order to comply with safety limitations of equipment.
7. Incumbent must be able to work a variety of schedules to provide needed coverage and meet access requirements.
8. Must have sufficient visual and aural acuity to operate a variety of standard test and measurement equipment.
